Understanding how language shapes change in living systems
Language Unearthed is my applied framework for working with language, meaning and change in complex social and ecological contexts.

Developed over 30 years of interdisciplinary practice, it supports people, organisations and agencies to understand how language shapes emotion, cognition and behaviour, and to use that understanding to design language systems that support positive change.​​
Language matters
​
Language continuously weaves emotion, understanding and behaviour together in everyday practice. Over time, patterns become embedded in individual and collective mindsets, organisational cultures, policies and institutions, often without conscious attention and awareness.
​
The stories we tell, the values we activate, the metaphors we use and the mindsets we reinforce shape how people feel about what's happening, how they make sense of it, and what change they believe is possible.
Language Unearthed brings these dynamics into view.​​
The Language Unearthed model​
At the heart of this work is an integrated model of how language operates within living systems.
​
The model draws on ecolinguistics, social neuroscience and systems thinking. It has evolved through my work in environmental research, education and communication, and is equally applicable to other complex adaptive systems, including social domains.
​
Language Unearthed examines how emotional, cognitive and behavioural dynamics are braided rather than sequential, and how they are shaped through everyday linguistic choices.​ Over time, these micro-patterns accumulate, shaping personal and collective mindsets, organisational habits, institutional logics and cultural norms. Together, they influence what people notice, value, trust, think, believe and act upon.

The model also surfaces the implicit ecosophies shaping projects and organisations, making underlying assumptions about people, nature and change available for reflection.​ It emphasises explanation and insight rather than persuasion or manipulation, creating the conditions for positive change.

The linguistic foundations
​​Language Unearthed is grounded in applied ecolinguistics, with a particular focus on how everyday language patterns shape feeling, knowing and doing.

This approach goes beyond traditional communication practice and looks more closely at how meaning is constructed through:

Creating new frames for change

Understanding how these deeper patterns in language work creates the conditions for insight and change. A systems perspective
While Language Unearthed emerged from work in ecology, conservation and natural resource management, it is equally applicable to other complex adaptive systems, including health, education, governance and community development.
